The Mission of the Department of Parks and Tourism is:

  • to provide optimum quality state park recreation facilities conveniently located and in sufficient quantity to meet the needs of all state citizens and visitors;
  • to provide adequate facilities and skilled leadership for developing and safeguarding natural resources;
  • to enhance the economic impact of tourism in the state and increase the state's tax base;
  • to collect, preserve, and make available for public use historical items and resource materials;
  • to provide executive direction and effective administration of fiscal controls, accounting, purchasing, internal audit, personnel management, and public information for all divisions of the Department;

Benefits

Our Department offers an excellent benefit package including immediate accrual of annual and sick leave, eleven paid holidays, and a contributory retirement plan. Our Department pays the major portion of medical health insurance for full-time employees and offers several medical plans from which to choose. These plans range from an indemnity plan with a PPO option to HMO's.

Other benefits include maternity leave, court and jury duty leave, military leave and a catastrophic illness leave program as well as Family and Medical leave. Employees with our Department may choose to participate in a deferred compensation plan and various options for life insurance, accident insurance, cancer care and intensive care insurance. Employees are also able to participate in the Arkansas Cafeteria Plan which is a program designed to allow an employee to pay for group health and life insurance premiums, dependent day care and out-of-pocket medical care costs tax free. All employees of our Department are also covered under workers' compensation and unemployment insurance.

Park Interpreter (Lake Dardanelle)

Location: Lake Dardanelle State Park, Russellville, AR
Salary: $26,943 plus benefits

Summary of Duties & Minimum Qualifications:
Pay Grade: 18

This position plans, coordinates, and presents interpretive education programs and special events for park visitors, schools, civic groups and private organizations. Applicant must have knowledge of flora, fauna, geology, history, recreation and natural resources. Position researches and records data regarding park resources and programs, writes press releases, newspaper articles, flyers, brochures and scripts for programs, and delivers presentations using audio-visual equipment. Other duties include assisting with supervision of park operations, planning, and trail maintenance and performing office and front desk duties as necessary. Must possess a valid driver’s license, be able to traverse rough terrain and work a varied shift, including weekends and holidays. Criminal background check is required. Overnight travel is required on occasion.

Summary of Duties & Minimum Qualifications:
Grade: 3

This position is a first-line greeter in the 125-seat Mt. Magazine Lodge Restaurant. Duties include greeting customers, setting up tables, taking food orders, waiting on guests, serving food and cleaning tables. Additional duties include operating cash register, as well as setup and wait service for banquets and conferences. This position has regular contact with food service personnel and the general public, so excellent public relations skills are required. Applicant must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends and holidays. Will be paid an hourly rate plus tips. A criminal background check is required.

GIS Coordinator/Database Analyst

This position is responsible for performing various duties associated with the database development, analysis, implementation/deployment, reporting, map production and maintenance of a Geographic Information System (GIS). Applicant must have the ability to work independently or within a team-oriented environment. A working knowledge of GIS concepts, including experience with ArcView, Microsoft Access, SQL, photogrammetry, orthophotography, and mapping is required. Applicant must also have cartographic capabilities and experience with other software, such as AutoCAD, Avenue, Spatial Analyst, 3-D Analyst, ArcInfo, Microsoft SQL server, VB script and Arc Internet Map Server.

Work hours vary (from 15 up to 40 hours or more per week) as do work schedules (weekdays, weekends, holidays, and evening work).
