Cossatot River State Park-Natural Area

Need a Map? Image PDF The Cossatot River begins in the Ouachita Mountains south of Mena in western Arkansas. Flowing southward, it passes through the Cossatot River State Park/Natural Area, which preserves a 12-mile stretch of the stream that includes the much-photographed Cossatot Falls area. After periods of sufficient rainfall, the stretch also contains what is arguably Arkansas's most challenging whitewater. Below the park, the stream borders the Howard County Wildlife Management Area and then is impounded to form Gillham Lake. Below the lake, the Cossatot continues south past DeQueen before joining Little River just above Millwood Lake.

Fishing: Smallmouth bass are prime targets for anglers above Lake Gillham. Below the lake, the stream's warmer waters host largemouth bass, catfish and bream.
