Cherry Valley
Cherry Valley is a community in Northeast Arkansas largely made up of agricultural and agri-business interests in Cross County. It is located 32 miles south of Jonesboro and 50 miles northwest of West Memphis. The town began as a small settlement sometime around the Civil War near the junction of Cooper’s Creek and the Harrisburg Road on the western slope of Crowley’s Ridge. Its name came from the grove of Cherry Trees near the creek.
With the construction of north-south railroad tracks along the western base of Crowley’s Ridge in the early 1880s, Cherry Valley’s postmaster recognized an opportunity. He built the Cherry Valley Hotel on the west side of the tracks, about a mile from the original town, and moved the post office from his home to a location adjacent to the hotel. Other businesses followed suit, and eventually the entire town had shifted. The town was formally incorporated in 1910.
Today Cherry Valley has a population of just over 650 residents. The town celebrates its heritage annually with a Cherry Fest held the last Saturday of September.
