Arkansas Rock 'N' Roll Highway 67 Marker – Skylark Drive In
...
What to know
In the 1950s and 1960s everyone enjoyed watching movies “under the stars”. At the Skylark Drive-In Theatre, on Hwy. 67 south, there was often live entertainment. The concession stand roof was the stage and folks sat in their cars or gathered in lawn chairs behind the building to see the live shows. Roy Orbison performed his break out hit, Ooby Dooby, there in the mid 1950s. Johnny Cash also played the Skylark to a record-breaking crowd at about the same time. Sonny Burgess and the Pacers played there and Sonny recalled that the entertainers had to climb a ladder, carrying their instruments up to the “stage.” Many other early Rock and Roll legends played the Skylark, including Charlie Feathers, Narvel Felts and Slim Rhodes.
