Arkansas boasts a diverse range of national park sites, from historic military forts to natural hot springs, that offer visitors a chance to explore the unique cultural and natural heritage of the state. Arkansas is proud to have seven National Park Service sites, each offering a unique perspective on the state and its place in American culture.
Though Hot Springs National Park -- established because of a remarkable array of 47 thermal springs -- is the most famous of Arkansas' national parks, there are six additional U.S. National Park Service units around the state:
Arkansas Post National Memorial tells the stories of the first permanent European settlement in the lower Mississippi River valley, including its role as a Civil War battleground in 1863.
The Buffalo National River was designated America's first National River in 1972 and today it still offers visitors miles and miles of clean water, magnificent limestone cliffs and wildlife viewing opportunities. This area is treasured by paddlers, hikers and campers.
Central High School National Historic Site in Little Rock is a civil rights landmark that continues to teach important lessons from the past. The visitor center and museum are full of artifacts from the era, and ranger-led tours offer an inside look at the school.
Visit the Clinton Birthplace National Historic Site to see the first home of former President Bill Clinton. Embark on a guided tour of the home, complete with exhibits about Clinton's youth in Arkansas.
Pea Ridge National Military Park marks the site of one of the most important Civil War battles west of the Mississippi River. Explore interpretive trails, educational exhibits and more.
At Fort Smith National Historic Site, visitors can view the remnants of two forts that once sat on Arkansas' border with the Indian Territory. From stories about "Hanging" Judge Isaac C. Parker to tales of the Trail of Tears, this place is rich with American history.
