Weaving a place for itself into the social fabric of summer and music in northwest Arkansas is the new Arkansas Music Pavilion (AMP) in Fayetteville.
Serving as a summer entertainment anchor for the area, the AMP is a fully-covered arts and entertainment venue located adjacent to the Northwest Arkansas Mall, on the southwest side near JC Penney. The AMP grounds consist of three acres with 21,000-square-feet under cover. The pavilion will seat 2,583 in row seating as well as 52 VIP tables that seat four people each. Standing room for 2,000 people is also available. Covering the stage and seating is a canopied, semi-permanent structure in a clover leaf design. Creation of the pavilion was inspired by some of the best outdoor music venues in the nation, such as the Universal Lending Pavilion in Denver and the music pavilions in Aspen and Breckenridge.
Dan White and Amy Mack, a husband and wife team, are the creators of the AMP. The couple decided to pursue the music pavilion because they felt the area just needed it.
"Every great mountain town deserves a great outdoor pavilion," White said. The duo has lived in Fayetteville for about two and a half years. "We decided that we were going to invest in the area for a long time," White added. "Our biggest goal is that the area has been accustomed to getting music on a pass-through basis. We're going to bring talent into northwest Arkansas that normally wouldn't have come here and then also bring people from the surrounding area to come and spend a night here."
The inaugural season for the AMP includes approximately eight live concerts from national artists. Already on the schedule are America on June 17, Nashville Star Tour on June 25, Third Day on July 15, .38 Special on July 28, Patty Loveless on Aug. 26 and Lee Ann Womack on Sept. 2. The Hog City Limits Festival with Robert Earl Keen will be Sept. 17.
White said the Christian group Third Day "will be our biggest show this summer by virtue of how many people follow that group."
In addition to live music, AMP will offer kids' shows and movies. The Sky's The Limit Kids Series includes up to six kids' programs geared toward family and child development. Trout Fishing in America is scheduled to play July 23 for this series. Programming will include six big-screen events, such as "Chick Flicks" with Bridget Jones' Diary set for July 5, Hitch on July 12, My Best Friend's Wedding on July 19, and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days on July 26. An AMP "Back to School Flick" will be Meet the Fockers scheduled for Aug. 9.
AMP will continue to add concerts and shows throughout the summer. The full AMP schedule can be viewed online at www.arkansasmusicpavilion.com. The Web site also offers a newsletter sign-up for interested persons to receive updates via email.
"We want to be collaborative and not competitive with anyone else in the area," White said. He explained that he is working in conjunction with the Walton Arts Center and other music venues to ensure schedules don't clash. "We just want to be good members of the community," he added.
All shows will take place rain or shine with gates opening at 6 p.m. and all events finished by 10:30 p.m. Ticket prices for concerts range from $15 to $45 and up, while entry to some events can be gained with a $5 or $50 receipt from the mall.
Tickets can be purchased five ways -- the AMP Mall Box office during mall hours; the AMP Box Office the day of the show; via phone at (877) 71-GROOVE; online at www.arkansasmusicpavilion.com; and, at AMP kiosks located throughout northwest Arkansas.
The pavilion, which will receive full construction on May 16, is also available for custom events such as weddings and corporate events throughout the summer. However, use of the canopies is available during the off season as well. Since the AMP is a seasonal pavilion, it is designed for easy assembly in the spring and dismantling in the fall. The clover-leaf footprint of the pavilion covers a half acre of land. During the off season, the pavilion will be disassembled and each of the four canopies that build out the pavilion is available for use off site, individually or as a unit.
AMP is currently on a year to year lease at the mall site and is looking for a permanent home for the future.
Getting There
The mall, which sits on the border of Fayetteville and Springdale, is located at 4201 Shiloh Drive, Fayetteville, Arkansas 72703. From I-540 (north or south) take the Fayetteville Business District Exit (Fulbright Expressway) and veer left. Go to Joyce Boulevard and take a left. Then take a right at Mall Avenue. Pavilion is straight ahead. There are over 4,000 free parking spots. The Will Call office is on the southwest side of the pavilion grounds.
