HOT SPRINGS -- Just in time for Labor Day Weekend, the renovation of campgrounds Area "C" and "A" at Lake Catherine State Park is complete and the campsites will be available for occupancy at approximately 1 p.m., today, according to State Parks Director Greg Butts. Those interested in reserving park campsites should make reservations online at ArkansasStateParks.com or by calling Lake Catherine State Park at 501-844-4176.
This renovation encompassed 32 campsites in Camping Area "C," an area that stretches along the shore of Lake Catherine and includes many lakeside sites. In Camping Area "A," located on a hillside nearby, a total of 12 campsites were renovated. Campground improvements include new roads, utility distribution systems and the parking pads and utilities at each campsite.
Most of the parking pads are now 60 feet long or longer. Now classified as Class AAA sites, each one is a pull-in or back-in campsite featuring water and sewer hookups plus combined electrical for 20 amp, 30 amp, and 50 amp connections. Each site includes a picnic table, grill, lantern hanger, and tent pad. Additional vehicle parking is scattered throughout the camping areas.
Campground improvements include two barrier-free campsites that are located adjacent to the two existing bathhouses. Both bathhouses now offer barrier-free access for visitors with disabilities.
Totaling $1,833,879, the campground renovation project began in August 2007. It was funded by Amendment 75, Arkansas’s conservation tax passed by Arkansas voters in 1996. The contractor was Lubin Enterprises Inc. of Memphis, Tennessee. Hanson & McLaughlin, LLC of Little Rock served as the design consultant.
Greg Butts said, "Amendment 75 is making a tremendous impact on the state parks. In fact, this dedicated fund, as it continues to bring improvements and enhancements to the state parks, has set the stage for Arkansas’s state parks to be one of the finest systems of parks in the nation." He noted that this wide range of improvements includes upgrades at campgrounds around the park system. "Camping is among the most popular activities enjoyed in Arkansas’s state parks. Because of this, many enhancements are focused on improving the camping experience for these outdoor enthusiasts," said Butts.
Lake Catherine State Park is one of the 52 state parks managed by the State Parks Division of the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism. Nestled in the Ouachita Mountains on the shores of 1,940-acre Lake Catherine, one of the five popular Diamond Lakes in the Hot Springs area, the park offers a wide range of outdoor recreational choices including fishing, boating, swimming, picnicking and hiking. Park interpreters offer guided hikes, boat tours and other programs.
During summer months, guided horseback trail rides are also offered at Lake Catherine.
One of Arkansas’s original state parks built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the park features CCC/Rustic Style facilities constructed of native stone and wood. Facilities include the park’s 68 campsites, 18 full-service cabins, picnic sites, a pavilion, marina with boat rentals, launch ramp, hiking trails, a swimming area, play-ground, nature center and visitor center with gifts and supplies for sale. Seventeen park cabins feature one-bedroom each. The park’s two-bedroom cabin is a barrier-free design featuring a large stone patio and access to the water including its own private, barrier-free fishing pier.
Camping choices include the park’s Rent-A-Camp equipment that features a 9’ x 12’ tent with wooded floor, two-burner stove, lantern, table, grill and other camping equipment.
Lake Catherine State Park is located near Hot Springs and Malvern. From I-30, take Exit #97 at Malvern and go 12 miles north on Ark. 171 to the park.
