Celebrated TV gardener P. Allen Smith calls Arkansas home. The host of three PBS programs and author of six books films much of his work on his own farm built atop a hill overlooking the Arkansas River north of Roland.
Now you can visit the Garden Home and Moss Mountain Farm when you come to Central Arkansas.Tours are available for individuals or groups on a scheduled basis throughout the year.
The home atop Moss Mountain has been featured in Smith’s three PBS programs, P. Allen Smith’s Garden Home, P. Allen Smith Gardens and P. Allen Smith’s Garden To Table. An internet series, Next Generation Garden Home, is centered around the construction of a 160,000 square foot home in 150 days on Moss Mountain Farm.
Visitors to the property have the chance to tour Smith’s famed Garden Home, a Greek Revival style house packed with his collection of pre-1830 handcrafted furniture, sketches and paintings by the gardener and seasonal decorations, most of which come from the property. Guests also tour the Terrace Gardens full of seasonal flowers, the vegetable gardens on the west side of the campus and the Charleston styled rose garden with its Gothic brick outbuildings.
After a morning or afternoon tour, guests are invited to break bread with a meal prepared from Smith’s recipes. Then, if he happens to be in attendance, a book signing commences. The four hour tour is completed with a visit to the gift shop.
Tours are offered two ways -- in packages for 40 or more guests, and individual reservations as part of an open house. For more information, call(501) 376-1894 or check out the P. Allen Smith Garden Home website at http://www.pallensmith.com/garden-home-retreat/.
